Year 7 The Journey Begins
Posted by nmccann on February 20, 2007
As the second Year Seven group through the school are completing their first CLE it is timely to reflect on how this CLE went. Staff who were here last year are invited to comment on their perceptions about how the students have adjusted to Year 7. (Last year this CLE was taught slightly differently) Staff who were on the CLE are invited to comment and make suggestions for others to comment on.

i think that the students are finding the one common CLE an uncomplicated approach as well as serving as a good introduction to the concept of our Connected Learning Experiences. The decision to have one task has made it less stressful for students and the slightly changed format of the feature article has also worked well.

Ditto to Jenny’s comment. Being new to the concept of CLE, the uncomplicated approach helped tremendously to understand how the CLE’s work and the extent of knowledge that was imparted to the students in the first 5 weeks (4 really) was awesome. The students have enjoyed the format and have shown no signs of stress in completing work that is new to them. I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to work with other staff and the sharing of our knowledge and experiences with the students.

I also agree that having one CLE at the start of year 7 is an excellent idea. The students have enough to deal with just being at high school, let alone a new type of school, so the less stress placed on them at this stage the better.
I think students need more guidance with organisation of their bookwork, as well as supervision of what is going in their books. I feel that we need a consistency amongst LAs for what we expect in their books. For example, in Science, we usually have quite strict “rules” for drawing scientific diagrams and we need to decide if we adhere to these just for Science or for all diagrams. We also need consistency amongst staff for expectations of neatness, labelling, setting out and marking of work.
They have been given good guidelines for organsiing their laptops, but not their books (unless I have missed something).
